Borde Hill Gardens    3 - 25th April 2011
Easter Bunny Trail - children can follow the easter bunny to find their chocolate prize

Sheffield Park Garden    2 - 18th April 2011

Tulleys Farm     9th - 25th April 2011

Save the Manatee

When Cathy and were looking for a unique logo for our website we came across a marine mammal known as the Manatee. By mixing a manatee form with cow attributes we came up with the very cute Molliemoo logo.

The Manatee is a gently and slow moving mammal which is close to extinction. They are Florida's official state marine mammal but unfortunately their decline is largly down to human activity and the largest known cause of death for a manatee is due to watercraft collisions.

They are beautiful grey aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout.

By increasing awareness of these mammals and through education, regulations, and enforcement the manatee deaths caused by humans could be substantially reduced and this would lead to their eventual recovery and saved from extinction.

Please take a look at the following website which tells you all about their plight and how money is being raised to save them.

Website: Savethemanateeclub

I think they are beautiful animals and hope that they will by around for many years to come.

Why buy organic cotton?

Having young children of our own we have seen the many benefits of buying and using organic cotton products.

These are just a few benefits, to both us and the farmer, to growing and using organic cotton...
  1. Organic cotton is grown using NO chemical pesticides, insecticides or dyes and is kinder to delicate skin.
  2. It is thicker, stronger and much softer than conventional cotton.
  3. The cotton is a biodegradable and renewable resource.
  4. Also, Organic cotton is grown using sustainable growing practices so that the impact on the environment is reduced, these include:
  • Untreated seeds and natural fertilizers are used
  • Crop rotation
  • Beneficial insects introduced to cut the population of bad ones so a natural balance is maintained
  • The soil retains nutrients and the water and air stay clean for future generations

With these practices in place the farmers and manufacturers of organic cotton have better working conditions, a decent wage and as no chemicals are used they are not damaging their health.

Visit a Local Farm This Spring

Now that we have longer days and warmer weather, why not, one weekend this spring, take your children to a local farm?

Children love to see animals at first hand and you may well be lucky enough to see a lamb being born. Lots of farms are open to the public all year around and are great to get children out and about.

Here are some great farms to visit in the sussex area:

  • Spring Barn Farm Park, Lewes - Lambing time begins from 28th March.
  • Tulleys Farm, Crawley - Easter family fun starts on the 9th April.
  • Fishers Adventure Farm, Wisborough Green - With many activities throughout March and April.

We think these are great days out for everyone so we are planning on taking our children in the next few weeks.

Family Activity Weekend Springwatch - 12th & 13th March 2011

If you feel like getting out and about with the family this weekend then why not visit the Nymans Estate situated in the picturesque High Weald landscape of Sussex. We often, as a family, visit this beautiful National Trust garden and let the children experience the great outdoors as well as stretch their legs.

During this weekend the 12th & 13th March they are holding a family activity weekend where there will be many things to do including decorating a tree with leaves, flowers, birds and eggs and also making mobiles, inspired by spring, to hang at home.

Nymans is internationally famous for its beauty and collection of rare plants so why not take a stroll through the gardens and try and spot the displays of snowdrops and magnolias as well as daffodils.

Pancake Day - 8th March 2011

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day is taking place this year on Tuesday 8th March 2011.

We all have milk and eggs in our fridge as well as flour and sugar in our cupboards so make the most of the one day a year that you and your children can have lots of fun cooking, or helping flip the pancakes, together without it costing lots of money.

When it comes to the ingredients you could consider purchasing organic products, especially happy eggs. I know that in our local area you can get organic produce delivered from the local farm.

My daughter loves to help me cook and is really looking forward to cooking pancakes. Her favourite part is breaking the eggs which she is really quite good at and surprisingly not a broken shell  in sight.

But obviously the best part is eating them.
