Nestle Kit Kat to switch to Fairtrade

The Fairtrade Foundation has announced today that Nestle will be switching to Fairtrade for their biggest selling chocolate brand, Kit Kat.

The first certified Kit Kat bars will arrive on shop shelves mid January 2010, benefitting thousands of farmers in Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), one of the poorest countries in the world.

As well as the Fairtrade price (or market price if higher) for the cocoa, farmers’ organisations receive additional Fairtrade premium payments to invest in long-term community and business development projects of their own choice, such as education and healthcare, the environment or their businesses.

It is great to see and lets hope more brands follow suit, as this will give thousands of farmers a better opportunity to work their way out of poverty.
