Eco Friendly Bonfire nights

As 5 November is around the corner I was wondering if you can have an eco-friendly bonfire night?

As bonfires cause environmental damage due to the release of gases and toxins in the smoke I have been advised you should try to burn only clean, dry garden waste like untreated wood and branches this minimises the amount of smoke produced.

Something I would not have thought of is to try to build your bonfire as close as you can to lighting it to reduce the risk that wildlife might get inside. Remember to check for hedgehogs!

Concerning fireworks, these are toxic so as an alternative you could use Chinese lanterns called Wishes in the Sky. Write your wish on the side of a lantern, light the candle and watch them float off into the sky. Tradition says the higher they fly the more likely your wish is to be heard by the heavens. The bits of the lantern that don’t eventually burn up are all biodegradable, and there’s no banging or crashing to scare the animals.

I am certainly considering this option with two young children it will be lovely to see them go off in the night sky!

Host a Green Baby Shower!

This week Anna and I were chatting with friends about Baby Showers and how popular they are at the moment. In the US, a baby shower is a well known tradition and a very popular way for the mum-to-be to get together with friends/family and celebrate the future birth of their child.

What about an eco-friendly baby shower?
A traditional baby shower that helps the environment and new baby at the same time! A few ideas below:

Invitations
Send on a recycled paper postcard (no envelope required) printed with non toxic dyes or go paperless and send an email invite using facebook or similar.

Green Gifts
Remember new baby gifts for baby and Mum!
Baby clothes, toys, toiletries and blankets that are made of 100% organic materials (www.molliemoo.co.uk can help!).

Remember! Natural and organic fibres are an ideal choice for babies delicate skin (a babies skin can absorb chemicals 5 times more easily than an adults skin, which can irritate their skin).

Used or recycled baby books & toys that are still in good condition (a lot of toys are never used so why buy new?).

Wrapping
Ask your guests to wrap all gifts in recycled/reused gift paper or newspaper, reusable baskets or storage containers that can be used in the nursery. I great idea is to wrap the gift in an reusable nappies or organic baby blanket tied with raffia (recycled paper).

Hope this helps! Any other ideas please let us know and we will add to this list..
